چکیده

This paper discusses the unfairness issue arising in a 802.6 DQDB network at high loads-when the traffic demand to a bus exceeds the capacity of that bus. As per the 802.6 protocol, at heavy loads, the end nodes along a bus experience longer delays than the other nodes. The origin and remedy of this heavy load unfairness is discussed. An access control scheme is proposed as a solution. The comparison of the proposed scheme with 802.6 protocol is presented. The simulation results and performance characteristics are discussed under several types of loads. With symmetric load conditions under the proposed scheme, all active nodes along a bus experience almost the same access delay and packet loss characteristics. Performance under several other load condition are also found to be satisfactory. ... Read complete abstract on page 2.

3-tier structured access protocol to control unfairness in DQDB MANs

This paper addresses the unfairness problem appearing in 802.6-based DQDB MANs. Traffic load demand is characterized as low (below 0.4 of the channel capacity), normal (from 0.4 to 0.9 of the channel capacity) or heavy (greater than 0.9 of the channel capacity). At low loads the 802.6 protocol is acceptably fair. At normal loads, however, the protocol performance is markedly unfair. The unfairn...

Demand and service matching at heavy loads: a dynamic bandwidth control mechanism for DQDB MANs

In this paper, the Alpha Tuning Mechanism for distributed queue dual bus (DQDB) networks is proposed. This mechanism achieves a match between the users’ demand and the resulting protocol’s service patterns. The use of a tunable a-parameter (representing some fictitious user population) and access protection lead to dynamic bandwidth control capability. The inherently position dependent fairness...

Simulation Study of WWW Traffic over a DQDB Network

We present a simulation study of WWW traac over a realistic DQDB network running the TCP/IP protocol stack. All network and protocol elements have been implemented in detail. A large scale DQDB network with 12 nodes and 24 access units is studied. QoS parameters of 552 TCP connections between end users are analyzed. The average frame length in our traac source model has been chosen according to...

Fairness Oriented Neighbor-Channel-Aware MAC Protocol for Airborne Sensor Networks

In airborne sensor networks (ASNs), the media access control (MAC) protocol is facing with serious unfairness problem due to the traditional protection mechanism of air-to-air communications among aircrafts. Actually by using the binary exponential back-off algorithm at high traffic loads to minimize collisions among users, the latest successful node can always benefit from this kind of MAC to ...

Alternative Strategies for Improving the Fairness in and an Analytical Model of DQDB Networks

This paper deals with the distributed queue dual bus (DQDB) (IEEE 802.6) network, and makes two independent contributions. First, the unfairness problem of DQDB is addressed, and several alternative solutions that can improve the network’s fairness are proposed. They include (1) the proportional assignment scheme (PR); (2) the (multiple-request) FCFS-message-queue-based DQDB scheme (MD); and (3...
